Performance Properties of Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)

Performance Properties of Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)

Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) is a thermoplastic elastomer with properties of both rubber and plastic. Here are some of its properties and performance:

  • Physical properties
SBS has a Shore C hardness of 11.0–41.0, ultimate tensile strength of 0.981–180 MPa, yield tensile strength of 0.196–58.8 MPa, and elongation at break of 190–1500%.

  • Performance
SBS is used in a variety of applications, including as a plastic modifying agent, asphalt modifying agent, and adhesives. SBS-modified asphalt binders are widely used in asphalt pavement because of their high- and low-temperature performance and fatigue resistance. However, SBS is susceptible to aging in high-temperature oxygen environments.

SBS is made from two monomers, styrene and butadiene. It has the elasticity of rubber at normal temperatures, but can melt and flow like plastic at high temperatures.
